Derby Frontier Makes Top Five Nominee Shortlist in Two Categories of 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards

Written by Kevin Dennison

In the powerful words of Lumpy Space Princess from Adventure Time: “Oh. My. Glob!” I am incredibly honored for Derby Frontier to have been chosen as one of the Top Five Nominees in the categories of “LGBTQ” and “Sports & Recreation” for the 2014 Canadian Weblog Awards. 530 Canadian blogs received nominations across 26 categories this year. With so much stellar content coming from all of those nominees, it is honestly a surreal feeling to have been selected for the shortlist of any category, let alone two of them!

While I am certainly thrilled to have been selected as a finalist in both categories, being shortlisted for LGBTQ blog of the year is something that I am particularly excited about. LGBTQI+ advocacy has been very near and dear to my heart for quite some time now. As a pansexual and trans* individual, who is passionate about contributing to the Trans* and LGBTQ Rights Movement across Saskatchewan in my everyday life, I feel extremely fortunate to have been recognized in that grouping.

I’d like to sincerely thank Ms. Dr. Joseph L. Simonis of the Windy City Rollers, Angie Reid (aka Easy Break Oven) of Calgary Roller Derby, Mack Schneider (aka The Smacktivist) of the Ohio Roller Girls, Andee Scallion (aka Miss Identified) of Hartford Area Roller Derby, celebrated triathlete Chris Mosier, and Mikayla Schultz of Gender Talk and TransSask Support Services, for contributing so much outstanding content to the blog during Trans* Awareness in Sports Week this year. I do not doubt one bit that your participation in this event played a great role in Derby Frontier getting recognized for its LGBTQ content!

I also want to say an ENORMOUS thank you to my wife Falon Dennison, aka EZ Bruiser, as she has always been there to cheer me on through my late nights wrestling with crippling self-doubt. She has been a tremendous source of encouragement and support through many of the biggest ups and downs I have ever faced as a blogger and she really helps me keep myself grounded. Additionally, this post wouldn’t be complete without mentioning my good friend and long time supporter of the blog, Hannah Wilkinson, aka Willkillsome. She has written a few pieces herself, helps with the social media side of things on occasion, and is just generally there for me a great deal not only in terms of the blog and derby stuff but in life as well.

Then, of course, there are the countless individuals from roller derby communities around the world who have agreed to interviews, as well as to the bout photographers who have provided photo usage permission for images included in the hundreds of blog posts here, and to all of you across the globe who continue reading and sharing content from Derby Frontier! Thank you all!

Finally, I would like to congratulate all of the other shortlisted blogs in this year’s competition. The work that all of you have put into your writing is incredibly inspiring and I wish each of you the best of luck during the final selection process.
